Now the students have an understanding of the strategies and it'll be easier for them to add or subtract using this method.
As with all the strategies, we want the students to understand the different ways, but they can use whatever feels most comfortable for them to solve problems. If they like the traditional algorithm, they can use it. If they like one of the other strategies better, they can use that. I will leave it up to them!
This will be the first time that we present problems vertically to students. They are used to seeing problems horizontally, so this will be something new to them. It is very important that they line up the place values when writing their own problems - especially when solving word problems.
