Here is our plan:
-adding without regrouping
-adding with regrouping
-subtracting without regrouping
-subtracting with regrouping
We will be spending a day or two on each of the ideas above. This means that it is ok if your child does not grasp it on the first day. We will continue to work to make sure your child can show mastery.
Today I'm going to show you how to add 3-digit numbers without regrouping using the base ten blocks (sticks and dots).
Let's use 513+124 as an example.
The students will make both of those numbers with their base ten blocks.
The will have 5 hundreds, 1 ten, and 3 ones plus 1 hundred, 2 tens, and 4 ones.
Then they will combine the hundreds with hundreds, tens with tens, and ones with ones.
They will count the hundreds, tens, and ones to make the answer.
Here's how they will draw this using squares (hundreds), sticks (tens), and dots (ones).
Now, you can see that I've combined the hundreds with hundreds by circling all the hundreds, and then the same with the tens and the ones. On the side, I wrote the total so it is clear what the value of each group is.
Here is a LearnZillion video that shows how to add 3-digit numbers without regrouping using the base ten strategy.
