This strategy is also called the expanded form strategy.
Let's use 342 + 515 as an example.
The students will break apart both numbers as shown in the picture below:
The students like to start with the hundreds, but I'm trying to get them in the habit of always starting with the ones. This will help when we get to the traditional algorithm later.
