I'm going to use 257+384 as our example.
Again, have the students start with the ones. When you add 7 and 4, you get 11. You can't write 11 in the ones place, so you have to regroup. I have the students draw a hundreds, tens, and ones chart off to the side so they can keep track of their work as they go.
The work in red below shows the regrouping. I circled 10 ones, crossed them out, and added an additional stick. Then I counted the number of ones that were not circled. In this case, it is 1. So I wrote that number in the ones place on my hundreds, tens, and ones chart.
